Topic 4 Water

Check out my YouTube channel!

In this examination of Earth’s water systems, we learn about the flow of life-giving water between the hydrosphere, geosphere and living organisms.

We investigate questions of ethics, justice, and law as they relate to who gets adequate clean freshwater and who does not.

We also learn about food production and fisheries in freshwater and marine ecosystems, and how dietary choices impact the sustainability of the food systems needed to feed growing human populations.

Finally, we connect questions of environmental ethics and justice with sustainability through an examination of the impact of pollution on aquatic food production systems.

You can find resources for each subtopic by following the links below.

4.1 Water systems

  • How do water systems support life on Earth, and how do they interact with other systems, such as the carbon cycle?

4.2 Water access, use and security

  • What issues of water equity exist, and how can they be addressed?
  • How do human populations affect the water cycle, and how does this impact water security?

4.3 Aquatic food production systems

  • How are our diets impacted by our values and perspectives?
  • To what extent are aquatic food systems sustainable?

4.4 Water pollution

  • How does pollution affect the sustainability of environmental systems?
  • How do different perspectives affect how pollution is managed?
