IB ESS Topic 1 Foundations Practical Activities — Complete Collection

Give your IB Environmental Systems and Societies students a practical, skills-focused introduction to Topic 1: Foundations with this complete collection of classroom-ready practical activities.

Designed specifically for the IB ESS course with first examinations in 2026, this collection provides a structured sequence of practical investigations, modeling activities, data-analysis tasks, and systems-thinking exercises covering the major concepts and skills introduced in Topic 1.

Rather than treating Topic 1 as purely theoretical, these activities ask students to apply ESS concepts through investigation, modeling, data interpretation, systems diagrams, simulations, and evaluation.

What’s Included

This collection contains 10 practical activities covering environmental value systems, systems thinking, feedback, models, sustainability, environmental change, and data analysis:

Practical 1A — Personal Environmental Value System

Students identify the inputs that shape their own environmental value system (EVS), locate their worldview on the ecocentric–anthropocentric–technocentric spectrum, and explore how different perspectives can lead to different responses to environmental issues.

Key skills: EVS analysis, perspectives, research, environmental issues, strategy and tensions.

Practical 1B — Values and Attitudes Survey

Students design a Likert-scale survey investigating the relationship between environmental value systems and attitudes toward a local environmental issue. The activity introduces survey design, sampling, bias, validity, anonymity, and ethical considerations.

Key skills: survey design, sampling, correlation, bias, validity, ethics, methodology.

Practical 1C — Systems Diagrams of EVS Worldviews

Students construct systems diagrams representing the inputs and outputs of ecocentric, anthropocentric, and technocentric worldviews. The activity reinforces the use of storages, flows, transfers, transformations, and feedback to represent environmental systems.

Key skills: systems diagrams, inputs and outputs, systems thinking, feedback, model evaluation.

Practical 1D — Construct a Systems Diagram from Data

Students use quantitative data from Earth’s water budget to construct a scaled systems diagram showing environmental storages and flows. They then use the diagram to perform calculations, interpret relationships, and evaluate the strengths and limitations of visual models.

Key skills: quantitative systems diagrams, data processing, calculations, scientific communication, model evaluation.

Practical 1E — Daisyworld

Students use the Daisyworld simulation to investigate negative feedback, system stability, equilibrium, and the use of models in environmental science. They manipulate model parameters, identify tipping conditions, construct a feedback diagram, and evaluate the limitations of the simulation.

Key skills: simulations, negative feedback, equilibrium, stability, tipping points, model evaluation.

Practical 1F — Mesocosm Design

Students design, construct, and monitor a sealed mesocosm or terrarium as a model of a closed system. They identify storages and flows of energy and matter, monitor changes over time, and revise their systems diagram based on observations.

Key skills: open and closed systems, energy and matter, systems diagrams, observation, modeling, data communication.

Practical 1G — Systems Diagram of a Pollutant

Students research a named pollutant in a specific geographic location and use secondary quantitative data to construct a systems diagram showing its sources, storages, flows, transformations, and impacts.

Key skills: secondary research, quantitative data, pollution as a systems concept, systems modeling, data evaluation, sustainability.

Practical 1H — Interpret Behaviour-Time Graphs

Students analyze long-term datasets related to environmental behavior and identify patterns and trends. They then research social, demographic, governmental, or NGO influences and use evidence to develop a conclusion about why behavior has changed over time.

Key skills: graph interpretation, trends, reliability, bias, uncertainty, research, evidence-based conclusions.

Practical 1J — Positive Feedback Diagrams

Students analyze positive feedback mechanisms using diagrams representing processes such as eutrophication, polar albedo, primary succession, and AMOC-related change. They trace the mechanisms, predict changes in equilibrium following a tipping point, and evaluate the strengths and limitations of the models.

Key skills: positive feedback, tipping points, equilibrium, diagram interpretation, model evaluation.

Designed for the 2026 IB ESS Course

The activities are explicitly connected to the IB ESS Topic 1: Foundations syllabus and are designed to develop the practical and analytical skills students need throughout the course.

The collection covers concepts including:

Environmental value systems and perspectives
Ecocentric, anthropocentric, and technocentric worldviews
Systems and interacting components
Storages and flows
Transfers and transformations
Open and closed systems
Earth as an integrated system
Negative and positive feedback
Equilibrium and stability
Tipping points
Models as simplified representations of reality
Sustainability and systems thinking
Pollution as a systems concept
Changes in environmental perspectives and behavior

Strong IB ESS Internal Assessment Connections

These are not simply worksheets containing questions about the syllabus. The activities deliberately develop skills that students will use in their IB ESS Internal Assessment.

Across the collection, students practice:

Developing and framing environmental questions
Designing repeatable methods
Considering sampling and data sufficiency
Communicating data clearly
Processing and interpreting quantitative data
Identifying patterns and trends
Considering bias, reliability, validity, and uncertainty
Evaluating methods and models
Identifying limitations and proposing improvements
Developing evidence-based conclusions

The collection provides activities connected to multiple IA criteria, including Criteria A, B, C, D, E, and F. The teacher notes explicitly identify how individual activities connect to these assessment criteria.

Teacher’s Notes Included

This is a teacher-supported collection, not simply a set of student activity sheets.

The included teacher’s notes provide:

Rationale for each practical
Health, safety, and ethical considerations
Guidance on common conceptual difficulties
Connections to specific IB ESS syllabus points
Connections to Internal Assessment criteria
Suggestions for using the activities to develop skills progressively

For example, the teacher notes explain how the sequence moves students from abstract EVS concepts into systems thinking, quantitative modeling, simulation, physical modeling, secondary-data research, and evaluation.

Ideal For

This IB ESS practical collection is ideal for:

IB Environmental Systems and Societies teachers
Teachers preparing students for the 2026 IB ESS examinations
International schools and IB World Schools
Teachers introducing Topic 1: Foundations
Teachers looking for ready-to-use ESS practical activities
Lessons on environmental value systems
Systems-thinking and systems-diagram lessons
Teaching positive and negative feedback
Teaching equilibrium and tipping points
Introducing scientific modeling
Building IB ESS Internal Assessment skills
Paper 1 and Paper 2 skills development
Student-centered environmental science lessons
Revision and consolidation of Topic 1 concepts

A Practical Way to Teach Topic 1

The activities can be used individually as lessons or combined into a longer Topic 1 practical sequence.

Together, they give students repeated opportunities to move between:

Concept → Model → Data → Analysis → Evaluation

This helps students see the connections between the foundational ideas of IB ESS rather than learning each concept in isolation.

The collection also deliberately revisits systems diagrams, feedback, models, data interpretation, and evaluation in increasingly complex contexts—helping students develop transferable skills they can use in later ESS topics and in their Internal Assessment.
