PSOW – Practical 1C Systems Diagram of EVS Worldviews with Teacher’s Notes

$2.00

Students use systems diagrams to model the inputs and outputs of ecocentric, anthropocentric, and technocentric environmental value systems while developing systems-thinking and evaluation skills.

Description

IB ESS Practical 1C: Systems Diagrams of EVS Worldviews

Help students understand environmental value systems as dynamic systems of inputs and outputs rather than simply labels to memorize. In this practical activity, students construct systems diagrams representing ecocentric, anthropocentric, and technocentric worldviews. They identify factors that shape each worldview, model these as inputs, and then identify behaviors, policies, or decisions that emerge as outputs. Students must represent storages as boxes and flows as arrows, annotate the nature of those flows, and evaluate the limitations of using a systems model to represent the complexity of human values.

Strong Systems Thinking Practice

This activity connects environmental value systems directly to the core systems-thinking skills of storages, flows, transfers, and transformations. It also encourages students to recognize that environmental worldviews are dynamic and context-dependent rather than fixed categories. The activity is connected to IB ESS Internal Assessment Criterion D and includes compare-and-contrast and evaluation questions suitable for developing examination and IA skills.

Ideal for

  • Teaching EVS as a system
  • Introducing systems diagrams
  • Practising storages and flows
  • Comparing ecocentric, anthropocentric, and technocentric perspectives
  • Developing IB ESS evaluation skills
