IB ESS Practical 1A: Personal Environmental Value System
Help students move beyond simply memorizing definitions of environmental value systems by asking them to investigate the inputs that shape their own environmental perspectives.
In this introductory IB Environmental Systems and Societies activity, students review the ecocentric, anthropocentric, and technocentric worldviews, identify influences that have shaped their environmental perspectives, and locate their own worldview on the EVS spectrum. They then apply different perspectives to a real environmental issue and consider whether their own environmental value system is fixed or capable of changing over time.
The activity is designed to make the abstract concept of an environmental value system (EVS) personal, analytical, and relevant while maintaining an appropriately respectful approach to differences in students’ values and beliefs.

Practical 1A directly addresses syllabus content including:
- Perspectives and how situations are viewed
- Multiple inputs influencing perspectives
- Values and their importance
- Values expressed through communication and action
- EVS as a model of inputs and outputs
- The ecocentric–technocentric EVS spectrum
Students also respond to questions that develop IB Internal Assessment Criterion A and B skills, including research questions, strategies, tensions between perspectives, and evidence-based reasoning.
