Description
IB ESS Practical 1H: Interpreting Behavior-Time Graphs
Help students see that environmental value systems are dynamic rather than fixed by asking them to find evidence of changing perspectives in real, long-term data.
In this data-driven IB Environmental Systems and Societies activity, students analyze secondary data sets that track human behavior over time. They identify trends, question the reliability and limitations of the data, and connect changes in behavior to inputs such as public health campaigns, legislation, economic change, media coverage, and the environmental movement. Students finish by drawing an evidence-based conclusion about how and why the perspectives of a society have shifted.
The activity turns the abstract idea that EVS change over time into a concrete analytical task. It also gives students early practice with the data-handling and interpretation skills they will need for the IA.
Built for the 2026 IB ESS Course
Practical 1H directly addresses syllabus content including:
- EVS as dynamic systems that change over time
- The influence of historical events and the environmental movement on perspectives
- Social, demographic, economic, and policy drivers of changing environmental attitudes
- Using data to show how collective EVS outputs shift
Students also respond to questions that develop IB Internal Assessment Criterion E skills, including identifying and describing trends, discussing bias, reliability, and uncertainty in secondary data, and writing conclusions supported by evidence. The research component also supports Criterion A skills.
Ideal for
- Showing students that environmental value systems can change
- Introducing secondary data analysis early in the course
- Practicing trend identification with spreadsheets and graphs
- Preparing students for IB ESS Paper 2 extended-response questions
- Developing early IA-related analytical skills
