PSOW – Practical 1E Daisyworld with Teacher’s Notes

$2.00

An interactive Daisyworld simulation activity in which students investigate negative feedback, climate stability, system behavior, and the strengths and limitations of scientific models.

Description

IB ESS Practical 1E: Daisyworld

Use the classic Daisyworld simulation to give students an interactive way to investigate negative feedback, system stability, and scientific models.

Students explore how the ratio of white and black daisies, bare ground, and global mean temperature interact within the model. They run the simulation under different parameter settings, record equilibrium conditions, investigate what drives the system toward daisy extinction, identify conditions associated with climate stability, and construct a negative feedback diagram.

The activity then moves beyond simply “running a simulation.” Students evaluate the limitations of Daisyworld as a representation of Earth’s climate system and identify unresolved questions that could be addressed through additional data or model modifications.

Excellent for Teaching Evaluation

Practical 1E directly supports IB ESS Internal Assessment Criterion F: Evaluation. Students evaluate methodological limitations, propose improvements, consider unresolved questions, and connect model behavior to conclusions about negative feedback and system stability.

Ideal for

  • Teaching negative feedback loops
  • Exploring Earth as an integrated system
  • Introducing climate-system modeling
  • Developing model evaluation skills
  • Preparing students for IB ESS Criterion F
