$2.00

Students design a Likert-scale survey investigating environmental value systems and attitudes toward a local environmental issue while developing skills in sampling, methodology, bias, validity, and ethical research.

Description

IB ESS Practical 1B: Values and Attitudes Survey

Teach students how abstract environmental values can be operationalized and investigated using survey research.

In this practical activity, students design a Likert-scale survey investigating the relationship between environmental value systems and attitudes toward a specific local environmental issue. They select an issue, develop balanced survey statements representing a range of perspectives, create an EVS scoring system, consider sampling, and write a repeatable method for administering and recording the survey.

The activity is particularly useful for introducing students to the challenges of measuring human attitudes and values while reinforcing important concepts such as bias, validity, uncertainty, sampling, and ethical research.

IB ESS Skills and Assessment

Students consider informed consent, anonymity, voluntary participation, potential bias, and the importance of avoiding leading or psychologically distressing questions. The activity is assessed through connections to IB ESS Internal Assessment Criteria B and C and asks students to evaluate the reliability of survey-based evidence.

Ideal for

  • Teaching values surveys and EVS
  • Introducing survey methodology
  • Developing students’ understanding of bias and validity
  • Connecting local environmental issues with IB ESS concepts
