The United States has more strong environmental science programs than any other country in the world. The American university system also has a huge range of prices, program styles, and opportunities. In this post, I’ll take you through the standout US schools according to my research. I’ll cover what makes each one worth a look in 2026-2027.
The famous names
Before I address the famous names, I want to make one thing clear: just because a college or university is famous for a particular program, that doesn’t mean it’s the best fit for you. Every student has a unique combination of academic profile, social interests, and family and financial considerations. Those are the factors that make a school best for you – and that’s more important than any ranking.
And now, onto the list….
Harvard currently sits at number one in the world for environmental sciences, according to QS. Its Environmental Science and Engineering track is part of a flexible concentration system.
Stanford consistently ranks in the world’s top five. Its Earth Systems Program is a dedicated undergraduate major.
MIT is especially strong in climate modeling, the math-heavy side of predicting how the climate changes over time. You can enroll in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences or Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Caltech is smaller and intensely science focused. It has a strong reputation in atmospheric and climate chemistry research within the Environmental Science and Engineering program.
These four institutions are elite, expensive, and highly selective. Apply to them if your grades genuinely match their admission standards. But they should never be the only names on your list.
Strong majors, sometimes at a lower cost
Not every great program comes with an Ivy League price tag or an Ivy League acceptance rate, though some of the names below come close.
UC Berkeley (also called Cal) has a genuinely strong undergraduate Environmental Sciences major, inside its College of Natural Resources.
Cornell, in Ithaca, New York, offers an Environment and Sustainability major through its College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, including a lot of hands-on ecology and natural resource work.
The University of Washington (Seattle) has strong programs in Environmental Science and Terrestrial Resource Management, Earth and Space Sciences, and Marine Biology.
UC Davis runs one of the largest, most established undergraduate environmental science and policy programs in the country. Want a big program with lots of course options and research? This one deserves serious attention.
Lewis and Clark College, in Portland, Oregon, has a respected Environmental Studies major in a more personal, small-classroom feel than a giant research university.
(Full disclosure: I have a child at Lewis and Clark – yay! – but she’s not studying environmental science – boo!)
Hidden gems: Under-the-radar schools with great environmental programs for undergrads
These schools may not be as famous as the big-name research universities above, but they all have something unique to offer instead. That’s why I consider them hidden gems: they offer a highly personalized education for students who want to pursue sustainability and environmental sciences professionally.
SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) in Syracuse, New York: The entire university is organized around environmental science and forestry. It’s the oldest and most singularly focused environmental and forestry college in the US, with extremely strong outcomes for a school its size.
Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, is known for its College of Forestry and its Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences program, as well as coursework and hands-on research at the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
Warren Wilson College (Asheville, North Carolina) is part of the Work Colleges Consortium: every student works, and a portion of that work wage is credited against tuition. Undergrads do coursework, internships, and research in Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, Sustainable Agriculture, and related fields.
Prescott College in Arizona is known for one of the most flexible, self-directed environmental curricula in the country. Majors include Field Ecology and Conservation, and you can add undergraduate certificates in Environmental Education and Sustainable Food Systems.
Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado, has two integrated majors, Environmental Studies and Science. What makes Colorado College unique is that it’s taught entirely on the Block Plan, where students take one course at a time, which suits field-intensive environmental coursework unusually well.
Arizona State University opened the first standalone School of Sustainability in the US in 2006. Sustainability is treated as its own academic discipline rather than a track inside biology or geography.
Western Washington University is a mid-sized public university, and its Huxley College of the Environment is one of the only entire undergraduate colleges in the US organized around the environment. As a bonus, it comes at a fraction of the cost of an equivalent private institution.
The bottom line
The United States offers everything from famous research powerhouses to smaller, close-knit programs. Prices range from nearly free (really!) to almost $100,000 a year. The right choice depends on how you learn, what you can afford, and whether you’re chasing a name or a genuinely good fit.
