Most students doing fieldwork for the first time show up with a phone, some vague notes about what they’re supposed to measure, and no real plan for how to record what they find. That’s not their fault. Fieldwork is genuinely hard to prepare for from a classroom.
I’ve been teaching IB Environmental Systems and Societies for two decades, and the methods section of the Internal Assessment is where I see students struggle consistently. Not because they can’t do the fieldwork — they usually can — but because they didn’t know exactly what the method involved before they got outside. By the time they’re standing in a field trying to remember how a point quadrat works or whether they’ve set up their transect correctly, it’s too late to look it up.
That’s the gap this journal is designed to fill.
Biology and Ecology Field Journal: Sampling Methods and Structured Note Pages for Fieldwork covers 22 field techniques used in ecology and environmental science: everything from measuring abiotic factors like soil moisture, dissolved oxygen, and light levels, to population sampling methods like capture-mark-release-recapture and kick sampling for freshwater invertebrates. Each technique includes a materials list, health, safety, and ethics notes, a step-by-step method, and guidance on interpreting results. The instructions and guidance are short and sweet, all written to be read and used in the field, not just in a classroom.

The second half of the journal is structured pages: lined pages for field notes, graph paper for data tables, and drawing pages for field sketches. The idea is that students carry one book that takes them from method reference to data recording without having to carry several books or notebooks.
Why this matters for the ESS IA
The IB ESS Internal Assessment is assessed on five criteria, and the methods criterion asks students to demonstrate that their investigation was conducted using an appropriate, well-documented approach. Examiners look for evidence that the student understood what they were doing and why — not just that they collected data.
A student who has read and understood the method before going outside writes a better methods section. They know the assumptions behind the technique they chose. They can explain why they used a point quadrat instead of a frame quadrat, or why they took measurements at multiple locations, or how their choice of sampling method relates to the research question. Those are the details that distinguish a competent methods section from a generic one.
This journal is designed to help students get there. It’s not a shortcut. It’s preparation and real-time help in the field.

Section 1 covers field techniques across four areas: abiotic factor measurement, vegetation sampling, terrestrial invertebrate sampling, and aquatic sampling. Section 2 provides 36 lined field notes pages. Section 3 has 37 pages of graph paper for data tables and diagrams. Section 4 gives 21 blank pages for field drawings and sketches.
I made it small (5×8 inches, or 12.7×20.3 centimeters) so it easily fits in a jacket pocket or a small backpack.
